If you haven’t noticed, I write a lot of poetry. I like it a lot.

But why?

Poetry is a way to express what I’m feeling without explicitly explaining it. Robert Frost said, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” When I write poetry, I want to communicate an emotion or situation. I can use any words to do this.

The Artof Poetry

I don’t have to follow the normal conventions of writing; I can arrange the letters however I want. Poetry is like art with words. You can cut them and make a collage. You can smear them all over the page. You can follow classical form and make a masterpiece. You can splatter randomly and see where they fall.

Who Cares About Cool?

It’s not typical for teens to be into poetry; it’s not exactly considered “cool” at my age. As usual, I’m not too concerned about what other people think of me, so this isn’t an issue for me. But if you are my age and are scared to write poetry because of what people might say, then I have some advice for you:

Never stop doing what you love to conform to what everyone else is doing. Normal things are usually overrated. And for the record, I think poetry is pretty darn cool.

Poetry is for Everyone

Also, I know that it’s sometimes perceived as too sophisticated for an average joe to understand. And some people think that they just don’t have the skill to write poetry.

You don’t need skill to write poetry. I’ve never taken a formal poetry class, but that doesn’t stop me. You just need to start, and you’ll gradually develop your own style. I know that if you never write your first line, you’ll never improve.
